slumdog millionaire [A+]

moviemcpeake snippet: film of the year!  the perfect film.  acting, directing, music, cinematography, screenplay, on and on.  I left wanting to see more Indian films - Bollywood here I come!

This story is of perseverance, protection, good and evil and fighting for love.  We are privilege to follow the life of a "slumdog" named Jamal.  He is accused of cheating on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"  The explanation of how he knows the answers, is the story of his life beginning as young boy in the impoverished section of Mumbai and continuing as an eighteen year old on a game show.

I don't want to spoil anything.  Just see this film.  If you only see one film this year - this is it.

revolutionary road [A]

moviemcpeake snippet: ok.  I LOVED this film.  LOVED it.  Sam Mendes (director, American Beauty [A+]) just seems to really get the pain and misery that exists behind the facade of the suburbs.  The dirty secrets, the ignored dreams, the corporate sellouts, the affairs, the life that slipped away.

The reunion of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio was worth the wait and perfect.  I haven't seen such a great couple performance in a long time (still thinking of one near as good).  Surprisingly, I think DiCaprio's performance was more oscar worthy than Winslet's.  I say that with hesitation as both delivered amazing scenes and emotion.  But Winslet's performance reminded me a bit of "The Hours" (which was layered with great performances). 

Go see this film.  See it and then think about it.  Even if you are happy, it makes you think about the possibilities.  The other paths available.  Question your paths, because, well, why not? 

the wrestler [A-]

moviemcpeake snippet: a great performance.  i think oprah may have said it best, you can't tell were mickey rourke ends and randy "the ram" begins. 

the film focuses on a washed up professional wrestler named randy "the ram" robinson.  it brought me back to my hulk hogan and randy "the macho man" savage WWF days.  yes, i did watch wwf.  randy just can't seem to let go of the ring.  he is at the end of his career (what is left of it) and he is desperately trying to fill his life, fill the void.

darren aronofsky (director, requiem for a dream [A+]) does another amazing job pulling out the raw human nature of his leading character and splashing it during each scene, each moment.  where I think the movie lacked, surprisingly, was with the other characters.  evan rachel wood, plays his estranged daughter and marisa tomei plays his stripper love interest.  there was something missing in both of their roles.  it wasn't the acting, perhaps the dialog, the portrayed emotions.  It was either void, predictable or just there.  but that of course just allowed for more focus on rourke and his spectacular portrayal of the wrestler.

if you grew up in the 80s or if you like catching the best performances of year this is a film to see.
